Rabindranath Tagore

 (Born: Calcutta, 1861, Died  1941 )

Important works:
Rabindranath Tagore is best known for his poetry, but he also wrote short stories, plays and novels. His first poetic collections - Manasi (l890), Chitra (1895) and Sonar Tari (1895) - used colloquial Bengali instead of the usual archaic literary form.

Gitanjali (Song Offering, 1912) is his most famous work. An English translation was published under Yeats' auspices. Other works include the novel, Binodini (1902) and Galpaguccha (Bunch of Stories, 1912).

Apart from writing, he held major exhibitions of his paintings in the West. He was also a noted composer.

Gitanjali - Deluxe Edition,   Rabindranath Tagore, Hc., 2002 edn.,  ISBN:

0333935756, $ 39.95 To Place Order
Description: In this ‘Song offerings’, Tagore uses modernised images from classical Indian love poetry to

symbolise his yearning to merge with the Supreme. So the mud-stained traveler, the parched summer earth,

the bride awaiting the return of her lord, the first monsoon shower, the flowers, the rivers and the conch are

images which gain a mystical depth in these poems. Included in this edition is W.B Yeats’ ‘Introduction to

Tagore’s English translation of the work’.

Description: This book is a selection of the best of Tagore’s short stories. These stories display the versatility

of the great writer. Ranging from the fanciful and supernatural in Hungry Stones, to the delicate poignance in

The Homecoming. Tagore had a remarkable capacity to empathise with his characters and his characterization

shows a great deal of psychological insight. A master of the short story genre, Tagore can evoke pathos and

humor at the same time. His sense of comic gives him – and the reader – an objective view of otherwise

sentimental situations. These stories have a firm narrative thread and are a delight to every reader

Description: She, who worships beauty and abhors ugliness, suspects that her husband, the King, to be

unsightly and leaves the palace. But she returns to realise her ignorance and returns to the king who is

Light as well as Darkness. This is the theme of the play The King of the Dark Chamber which is the English

version of the Bengali play ‘Raja’ published in 1911. The story in its outline was adapted from a Buddhist tale,

but Tagore moulded it into a symbolic play of a spiritual quest for Truth and Beauty.

Description: These lectures and addresses were originally compiled to satisfy the Western world’s curiosity

about the thoughts, ideals and beliefs of the man whose English translation of Gitanjali had overwhelmed

them by its freshness. Tagore the poet had become known all over the world; Tagore the philosopher was little

known. Tagore here tells us of his early life, about the school he had created, his views on progress and

civilisation, modern industrialisation, the nature of creative activity and what he understood by art

Description: Originally published in Bengali in 1912, Tagore’s Jivansmriti, an account of the first twenty-

seven years of his life, came out in English in 1917. Starting with an account of his Spartan upbringing in

a large joint family, Tagore describes the early years of education, his first real acquaintance with his

ascetic father on a trip to the Himalaya, his apprenticeship in poetry, music and theatre under the tutelage

of his remarkable cousin, Jyotirindranath Tagore, his first visit to England and the composition of his

earliest works. The book ends with the important death, that of Jyotirindranath’s wife; a death which deeply

affected Tagore’s poetic personality.

Description: In 1917 when the First World War was at its height Tagore dedicated the English version of

Sacrifice ‘to those heroes who bravely stood for peace when human sacrifice was claimed for the Goddess

of war’. Tagore however was also aware of the limitations of nationalism which deifies one’s own country

and could ead to naked violence unless illuminated by peace and tolerance. A theme which finds symbolic

representations in the play Sacrifice.
